Restaurant Owners Prosecuted For Fire Safety Breaches

Owners of the Red Ginger restaurant in Bushey, Hertfordshire have been prosecuted and fined for breaching fire safety regulations.

An arson attack on the premises resulted in one employee who was sleeping upstairs, having to escape from the first floor window and slide down the roof.

Assessments made after the fire revealed the fire alarm system was not working and the pair, Kamruz Zaman and Adiel Choudhury had failed to provide safe emergency routes and exits.

Both pleaded guilty to several offences under the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order 2005 and were fined a total of £20,941.

“Where breaches of fire legislation are considered so serious that there is a risk of death or serious injury to persons, we will consider prosecution,” said Hertfordshire Chief Fire officer, Roy Wilsher.

“In this case members of the public and employees were put at risk and one employee was extremely fortunate to escape with his life.”

The Executive Member for Community Safety, Richard Thake added: “I hope this serves as a lesson to other business owners that we will take action when fire safety regulations are flouted.”
